DEADLINES!

Today was our day to have or stories ready to go to press. Needless to say, it was a very hectic environment in the news room. I managed to produce two articles that I'm satisfied with. The candy boost provided by Joe Dennis and the counselors really helped! I look forward to seeing all our hard work in the form of a newspaper.

Camp so far= pretty awesome

I have to admit it's going a lot smoother than I thought it would. When I first found out we were writing our final drafts in just under three days I thought I wouldn't be able to do it. But the story wrote itself and now I'm chillin getting hyper off of this rockstar energy drink. I lost my Ed Hardy sunglasses today and my bracelet I just bought keeps breaking which is muy triste pero I'm gonna look on the bright side and just finish up this story which I'm having trouble keeping under 300 words. I can't wait till Grady after dark! Even though that homeless dude scarred me, Athens is awesome. A little expensive for me taste but I will revisit that jewelry vendor to buy at least 3 more pieces. :)

Chai Anxiety...

is feeling overwhelmed by the ridiculous number of options at the coffee shop.

Chai anxiety is completely irrelevant to News Writing, however, I felt some sort of feeling of overwhelming sensations at UGA's bookstore this afternoon. So many interesting books, I thought it was a beautiful place, better than Barnes & Noble, although they need to have more books! Funopolis was really fun tonight and everyone is so funny and outgoing. I'm sorry for those who got in trouble during the ride back to Mell Hall though.

In class today I finished my article, although I was confused as to what angle to take and what to focus on specifically. I've never done 'news' writing before but focused on a variety of feature and editorial writing at school, so this class is truly a challenge for me!

As of today, I learned what words not to use in news articles and how to make a story 'readable.' Katherine, Nicole, and I went out to downtown Athens to interview some people for our separate stories. It was fun and I think Katherine and Nicole have great stories too!! The people I interviewed were very nice, helpful, and were actually interested in the North Korean topic.

I cannot wait for tomorrow and hopefully my article doesn't get any shorter than it already is. I'm looking forward to downtown Athens and more learning experiences!

Let's have some fun this week is...

Rockstar Camp!

Beginners mode was overwhelming in News Writing class today! I suppose tomorrow's going to be full of surprises, and in spite of being the first day I learned information that will be helpful next year for the Woodland Chronicles staff members. For example, our instructor Mrs. Boggs gave a brief introduction to story format, 'understand the news values', and interviewing. News Writing has very intelligent people with great ideas and skills. I'm very pleased to be surrounded by such a bright group of people.
I'd like to briefly go over some of the material I learned specifically what makes a story newsworthy, for instance what is the impact of the story, the time it happened (is it recent?), does it cover someone important the audience wants to learn about (prominence)?, where it happened... Although everything I learned is important and interesting, my favorite is on interviewing because it seems like a challenge to me. Interview is not just asking someone questions and moving on, but in order to write a great story you have to apply yourself more. Observing skills and self-confidence are two of the most important qualities I learned a good interviewer can have, having strong questions and a strong foundation of information on the topic are also critical.
Hopefully, tomorrow I'd be more alert and involved in our class because I'm eager to learn more about 'what an actual newspaper staff' really must do to make a 'paper successful. My number one priority is improving my writing skills (i.e vocabulary) and ability to work with other people. I have no experience whatsoever as to 'popcorning ideas' and creating a product with so many different ideas in it!
